Web Content
Creating content
Writing for a website is like all writing in that it should be done well. Bad writing stands out. No matter how clean the design, how flashy the animation, or how sophisticated the interactive elements, nothing says “don’t trust this website” like poor writing. Quality writing commands attention, clearly conveys ideas, and creates trust.
Writing for websites, often called content creation, also requires different skills. People read on the web differently. They scan more quickly, digest information in smaller chunks, and are constantly ready to click away to a better source of information. Expectations as to where certain types of information on a website should be found must be met. A website has to instantly tell a visitor they are in the write place, it takes only a second to click back to a search page and try something else.
To make things more interesting, a good web content developer is not just writing for humans. Search engine spiders are a critical audience. They don’t read a web page the same way a human does. However, over 85% of human traffic finds web pages because a search engine spider has found them first. If your writing doesn’t appeal to the spiders, nobody else will ever see it.
Not everyone is gifted with the ability to write well. Many brilliant technical people have not had time to hone their writing skills. Even good writers may not understand search engine optimization or the special information chunking style users expect from a website.
You can hope spend the time to bring your writing skills up to par, you can hope visitors will overlook bad writing (they won’t), or you can hire someone to develop the content for your website. If you hire me, you will get years of experience writing for the web, along with skills in search engine optimization and a solid understanding of information architecture. I can take your ideas and polish them up, spread them out so people can find the right ones, and present them in a manner friendly to search engines as well as humans.
