Say you're a bit-time television producer.  Perhaps not a celebrated artist.  But, among the schlocky producers of schockly crap, you stand out.  Then you die.

Knowing that celebrities die in threes, you might hope that your seat-mates would be peers in some way.  It would really, really suck if the other two dead celebrities who are riding in your little tram-car to heaven are Patsy Ramsey and that guy who kept suing Anna Nicole Smith.

We Went Better Indecency! June 11, 2006

Congress, which seems chock full of indecency itself these days, has raised the fines for on-air "indecency" by a factor of ten.  Now, since we can assume that somehow this increase in the cost of doing business will be passed on to the consumer, we should consider what we're getting for our money.  The case which is the basis for all this flapping around was the quick, almost imperceptible baring of Janet Jackson's breast.  If we're going to pay ten times as much, we should get ten times better flashing, from ten times more attractive women.  And you shouldn't need Tivo to actually see what you're paying for, either.

Honor and The Constitution May 19, 2006

The Constitution is not a sacred document, but it's as close is it gets in a secular society.  It's a starting point for agreement among people who are united by little else.  It has been distorted, abused, falsely frozen into worship, and rarely, amended.  The amendment process is slow, difficult, and normally marks a fundamental change in basic social values.  Like abolishing slavery.  Now there is a trend in which politicians, instead of doing actual work, promote constitutional amendments.  Since these rarely have any chance of being implement, this seems harmless enough.  However, I believe that each token proposal tends to devalue the basic social document of our system.  If we want to honor it, we should require some ritual of honor be made before any attempt to mend it is made.  It should be way harder to amend the constitution than, say, join the Yakuza.  Ergo:

Before proposing a constitutional amendment, the proposing politician should, in a show of honor and courage, cut off his/her little finger.  This may sound extreme, but it is fully in line with the gravity of such proposals.

Let Colbert Sing the National Anthem May 1, 2006

Possibly Karl Rove has been too busy going to hearings to occupy his usually role of master-minding image-building events. In any case, SOMEBODY thought it would be a good idea to let Colbert roast Bush in front of the emasculated press corp. Perhaps it was the same person who booked Rosanne Barr to sing the National Anthem.

A blogger, Maine Web Report, who covers internet activites having to do with the State of Maine, is being sued by a giant crappy ad agency, Warren Kremer Paino Advertising.  Actually, I don't know for sure that WKPadvertising is crappy, but how can a company that sells itself as being creative, insightful, and edgy come up with no better response to criticism than a multi-million dollar lawsuit?  Also, they have a pretty crappy website, using too much flash and bad navigation to showcase, well, nothing.

Falling Down: Jessica Simpson April 4, 2006

People should fall, now and then.  Rather, people should try to do things that are difficult.  Things that stretch them, make them grown.  I have no problem with public failure.  But there is a class of celebrity who can fall down without ever knowing.  They do stupid things, and they have a squad of handlers who shield them from the consequences of the fall.

Jessica Simpson fails twice in one video.  She fails at being Daisy Duke, because she's too generic, too blond, and too simple.  Dukes of Hazard would have been a horrible movie in any case, but she didn't help.  THEN she insists on taking on Nancy Sinatra.  Her remake of "These Boots" is as silly as Steve Martin trying to be the Pink Panther.  Somebody needs to tell her that she's fallen down enough for awhile and should go back to what she does well.

Death Penalty? December 12, 2005

Tookie Williams is the ultimate argument against the Death Penalty. Because, if there is any justice to the penalty, he deserved it as much as anyone, when convicted. However, the man he is today does not deserve death. Apparently, however, he will die anyway, because the Governator cannot afford the luxury of mercy (or decency).

When Cheney and Rove fall, and W has to actually do President stuff, it’ll be like Milli Vanilli doing a comeback using their own voices.
